Challenging the Doctor-Engineer Hierarchy

In a world full of many professions, people often opt for medicine or engineering, either. Both of the professions are highly popular and difficult at the same time, you might think pursuing any of them will be easier just because you’re passionate about it, but it’s not that simple, it’s years of hard work and struggle.

The question arises, why are engineers overlooked? Is the degree easy to get? Are the subjects very easy? does it require no research work or are the Jobs very relaxing? No. When I sit by myself and I try to figure out why are engineers so neglected, I can’t think of an answer. I being an engineer felt it was incumbent upon me to highlight the value of engineers, the forgotten heroes.

I don’t dispute the fact that doctors are mankind’s angels. They’re the saviors of humanity. Working day and night doctors save us from killing diseases and treat us from illness and I completely agree with the assertion that without doctors, we will not be able to fight these contagious diseases. But are the doctors all we need?

Biomedical Engineers

To facilitate the understanding, I’ll present pertinent facts. Let’s begin with the hospitals where people find the profession, they’re obsessed with. Will there be a hospital in the first place if biomedical engineers stop making machinery like ventilators? Will doctors be able to design their mechanical components, electrical systems, and software controls? It’s an engineer who brings life to these machineries and then the doctor operates it to treat us. What about diagnostic tools and imaging equipment, prosthetic limbs, and implants? A lot of devices are in hospitals and you see them because of engineers.

Biomedical Engineers

Now let’s talk about another thing that you won’t ever want to lose, your house. Will you be able to live in that house if civil engineers don’t exist? Who’ll make the drawings for you? Will a doctor evaluate the slope of the land and design strategies for grading or leveling the ground for a stable foundation? Or water drainage will be planned itself? None of this is going to happen. The houses we live in, their foundations were laid by the civil engineers. If this doesn’t move you either, then think about the roads, railways, tunnels, and bridges that are all designed by engineers.

Environmental Engineers

Turning our attention to environmental engineers, will doctors possess the ability to operate water treatment plants and wastewater treatment plants?  Will they be capable of controlling the pollution and don’t forget about our energy resources that are running on empty, will doctors be able to conserve them and generate? The strategies for preserving energy resources, who’ll design them? Environmental engineers with their skills select and implement perfect machinery that protects our environment and also promotes sustainable practices. Not to be overlooked, environmental engineers mend the damage that others do to the environment. You won’t be able to witness this advanced infrastructure because unless an environmental engineer conducts environmental impact assessments, no major construction can take place.  Their tireless efforts are the foundation stone for a sustainable world.

Mechanical and Electrical Engineers

Now shifting your attention to mechanical engineers, from the tools used in construction to the ones used in daily life, mechanical engineers design them. Have you ever noticed how these home appliances have made your life a cakewalk? Mechanical and electrical engineers design them. Speaking of electrical engineers, they can analyze complex electrical networks and as far as I know, no doctor can do that.

Petroleum Engineers

Someone who’s not a petroleum engineer can be expected to design well and perform drilling operations? No. Petroleum engineers serve as a conduit between geology and the practices of oil and gas extraction.

Telecommunication Engineers

Have you ever thought about how easily we make calls to those sitting at the other corner of the world, how easily a call connects us but who’s behind this? Who made this possible? Telecommunication engineers design the complex networks that let us make voice calls and video calls, the global connectivity we’ve is all because of them. They also integrate satellite communication into your network and no one except them is capable of doing any of it.

Software Engineers

Mobile apps for banking, shopping, managing finances, and booking appointments have made our lives a breeze, and all thanks to software engineers because their work has transformed our way of life and work. Software engineers gave us E-commerce platforms by which businesses are reaching the heights of success.

Marine Engineers

Have you given any thought to the idea of global trade? Marine engineers ensure the smooth flow of goods across the world’s oceans. The underwater infrastructure like pipelines and communication cables, marine engineers are the ones who manage these and nobody expects a doctor to do that.

That’s not even all the engineers because enlisting every type of engineer and their efforts will take years.

After all of this why do we neglect engineers so much, why we are only obsessed with the ones who are doctors, all these remarkable efforts made by engineers stay overlooked, this might sound lame to you but this is a humiliation to all the engineers in the world. It’s time that we rethink our priorities and respect the engineers the same way the doctors are being respected. I entirely agree that doctors are the angels of mercy. They’re the healers and hope of humanity, guardians of health, lifesavers, and much more but engineers are no less than doctors. The world moves because engineers exist, they’re the masterminds behind modern marvels, unsung heroes of modern society, guardians of progress, and pioneers of the future. Our lives wouldn’t have been this much easier if engineers didn’t exist.

To sum up, engineers shape the world and without them, the world will never spark progress. The next time you meet any engineer don’t forget to pay them a big thanks for these amazing advancements, show them the same love and inspiration that you show the doctors because, in the end, engineers are the ones crafting a better tomorrow.
